About the Role:
Ciena is seeking a motivated and technically inclined intern to join the Solution Engineering & Introduction (SE&I) team for the Fall 2025 term. The SE&I team is responsible for New Product Introduction (NPI) within the Optical Systems portfolio. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a customer-facing engineering team and contribute directly to the readiness and deployment of next-generation optical networking solutions.
As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience by supporting day-to-day engineering tasks, developing automation tools, exploring AI integrations, and contributing to software and hardware testing infrastructure. You will be a valued contributor to the broader SE&I mission, gaining exposure to product development, cross-functional collaboration, and cutting-edge technologies.
Position: Solutions Engineer & Introduction Intern – Fall 2025
Location: Ottawa (Greater Ottawa Area, Canada)
Type: Full-Time Internship
Duration: 4 Months (September to December 2025, with possible extension)
Pay Range: $24.50 – $33.00 per hour
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist engineers with lab setup, document management, and hardware inventory tracking
- Develop software tools to automate manual SE&I workflows and tasks
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to review AI advancements and propose use cases
- Build and maintain backend scripts for automated optical transceiver testing tools
- Contribute to the design and development of intuitive GUIs
- Document work thoroughly using guides or Confluence, and train extended team members
Eligibility Criteria:
- Students enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines
- Must be available full-time for the internship duration (September to December 2025)
- Must reside in or relocate to the Greater Ottawa Area for the duration of the internship
Education Requirement:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent engineering program
Technical Skills Required:
Python, GUI development, Tkinter, PyQt, Kivy, GRPC, NETCONF, REST API, software documentation, Confluence, AI/ML (TensorFlow or PyTorch), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), Ethernet, DWDM, optical transport, OTN
